In April, the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies welcomes Jane Owen, an editor at The Financial Times and 2015 Yale Poynter Fellow. An author, designer, broadcaster, and campaigner, Owen is editor of the Times’ “House & Home” section, where she writes about gardens and landscapes. Her books include “100 Ways to a Beautiful Garden,” “Gardens Through Time,” and “Eccentric Gardens.”

During her visit Owen will participate in two public events at F&ES. On Monday, April 6, she will be part of a discussion, “The Origin and Future of City Parks,” with Colleen Murphy-Dunning, Director of the Urban Resources Initiative. F&ES Dean Peter Crane will moderate the discussion, which begins at 4 p.m. at Bowers Auditorium, Sage Hall, 205 Prospect Street.

On Tuesday, April 7, Owen will discuss food issues with Mark Bomford, Director of the Yale Sustainable Food Project. The event, “Gardens, Growing and Local Food,” will begin at noon in Burke Auditorium, Kroon Hall. 195 Prospect Street.

Both events are free and open to the public.

An award-winning journalist, she served as an executive at The Times (of London) for nine years and was their garden correspondent for five years; was garden correspondent and general columnist at the Daily Express; and has written about family and personal issues for various newspapers and magazines. She also writes about issues pertaining to sustainable food. She has also appeared on numerous television broadcasts, including the BBC series, “Gardens Through Time,” and the Channel 4 archaeology series, “Time Team.”

A recognized designer of gardens, in 2010 she won a gold medal for her Chelsea Flower Show garden made with the help of Baka pygmy hunter gatherers from the sub Saharan rainforest. The garden won significant publicity for the plight of Cameroonian pygmies. A co-founder of the Oxfordshire Gardens Trust, she has designed various gardens. Her own earthwork garden in Oxfordshire has been featured in several broadcast programs and magazines.

She also serves on the board of Women of the Year, a UK-based organization that has recognized and celebrated women of all backgrounds since 1955.
