Summer 2012 Paid Cameron Speth Fellowship at NRDC for students from developing countries and Japan- Deadline = Feb. 20, 2012

The Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc. (NRDC), a leading nonprofit environmental organization with a staff of 400, including scientists, technical experts, lawyers, and other specialists, is seeking qualified applicants from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies for the Cameron Speth Fellowship.

The Fellowship is a 10 week paid research and advocacy position with NRDC starting in May, 2012.  NRDC is looking for a qualified applicant to work on various climate change, energy and environmental issues.    The Fellow would work in NRDC’s Washington, DC, San Francisco, New York or Beijing office on one of five projects:

  1. Work with the International Program’s Latin America team on research and analysis related to a proposed transmission line that would connect five proposed mega-hydroelectric dams in Chilean Patagonia with the demand center to the north. Research will include looking at the lands and protected areas the line would cross to identify potential environmental and health impacts. Research will also cover best practices in siting and operation of similar lines.  Spanish language ability is strongly recommended. Location: Washington, DC office.
  2. Work with NRDC’s India Initiative on research, analysis and advocacy for exciting climate change and clean energy projects in India. The fellowship includes advancing energy efficiency in buildings and appliances, climate adaption focused on heat stress, analysis of India’s Solar Mission, and increasing US-India cooperation on clean energy. Location: San Francisco office.
  3. Work with the China Program’s Sustainable Cities team on research, analysis and advocacy related to NRDC’s work in China, with a particular focus on accelerating building energy efficiency and urban smart growth. Location: Beijing office.
  4. Work with the International Program’s International Climate team on research, analysis and advocacy of climate change actions in key developing countries, with a particular focus on analysis of deforestation reduction opportunities and opportunities for global clean energy deployment. Location: Washington, DC office.
  5. Work on NRDC’s new Global Campaign to Phase-out Dirty Diesel through reduced sulfur in vehicle fuels, improved vehicles, and other measures.  The Fellow will assist a cross-program NRDC team in research, analysis, and advocacy to support our efforts in China, India, Mexico, Chile, and Brazil. Location: Washington, DC office or NY office

The Fellowship is available to FES students from developing nations or Japan who will be returning to FES for studies during Fall 2012.

The salary for this position is based on a nonprofit scale.  The Fellowship will cover the costs of transportation to and from New Haven to Washington, Beijing,  San Francisco or New York.
