The Yale School of the Environment offers a variety of degree programs, many of which can be customized to meet each student’s professional goals, and prepare them for careers in environmental science, management, and policy.
The MESc is designed for students who want to conduct original scientific research on today’s global environmental challenges. Students can choose research topics from a wide array of topics, and the program has a deep disciplinary focus that includes formalized coursework and research in the philosophy and practice of science. Faculty advisors work closely with students on their scientific research, helping students to design and implement master’s research that is consistent with their career goals.
The MFS is designed for students wishing to conduct scientific research on forest-and-people-related topics. The degree program has a deep disciplinary focus and includes formalized training in the philosophy and practice of science. Training is provided through coursework in combination with extensive research on a forest-related issue of interest. The scientific research required for this degree is conducted in close collaboration with a faculty advisor, who works with students to design and implement a program for their master’s research that is consistent with their career goals.
The PhD program is designed for scholars and researchers who want to understand and solve complex environmental challenges. The five-year program is fully funded and independent of any faculty research grants, allowing doctoral students the opportunity to work with Yale’s world-renowned faculty, and the intellectual freedom to explore the environmental issues that most inspire them. Graduates complete the doctoral program having gained the disciplinary depth and strong leadership skills which enable them to have success in any career path — academic, government research, policy, nonprofits, and the private sector.

The MEM curriculum is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of one area — a specialization — while also offering the flexibility to explore other disciplines and subject areas. The program draws from coursework in the natural and social sciences and focuses on the complex relationships between policy, management, and science. Graduates of the program are next-generation leaders, working across disciplines and sectors — industry, government, NGOs, academia — to tackle the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
The MF is designed in three educational stages with an emphasis on development of technical knowledge and professional skills: stage one provides a foundation in biological, physical, and social sciences; stage two focuses on frameworks and skills for integrating knowledge within a social, economic, and political context; stage three is clinical and prepares students for solving real-world management and policy problems around people and forests.
Accredited by the Society of American Foresters (SAF), the MF prepares students for a wide range of careers — from conservation to development, from rural to urban, from global to local.
