To the YSE Community:
I write with a heavy heart to share with you that a member of our community, Kevin Jiang MESc ’21, was fatally shot in New Haven last night. This horrific and tragic incident is under active investigation at this time, and we and the University are working to support his family as much as possible. We’ve been in contact with Yale Police Chief Ronnell Higgins and New Haven Police have been working through the night and this morning. He will update the community as additional information becomes available.
I know this tragedy comes during a year that has already been filled with so much sorrow. Please know that we in our School stand ready to support you. I am so sorry that this is coming at a time that we cannot gather in person to console each other, but we have scheduled an informal virtual community gathering this afternoon at 3 pm via Zoom. This gathering will allow us to listen, grieve, and simply be together during this terribly difficult time.
If you would like to speak with a grief counselor at Mental Health and Counseling over the weekend, you may reach them by calling Acute Care at (203) 432-0123. During the week, you can reach Mental Health and Counseling by calling (203) 432-0290. You may also reach out to the chaplain's office at (203) 432-1128 or through the website chaplain.yale.edu
where you can sign up for an appointment on the same day.
This is a difficult loss for our community, and the coming days, weeks and months will be challenging as we grieve together. Students, please feel free to reach out to your professors or to the YSE Leadership Team if you need any accommodations.
I will reach out with more information when we receive it and are cleared to share it. In the meantime, my heart is with you.
