Fenichel Appointed to Knobloch Family Professorship
Eli Fenichel, a faculty member at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES) since 2012, has been named the Knobloch Family Professor of Natural Resource Economics, a position endowed in 2011 by the late Yale alumnus and conservationist Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. ’51. The appointment will go into effect July 1, 2020.
The professorship will aim to improve the understanding of the economic value of ecosystems, educate business and government leaders about their value, and incorporate that knowledge into land use and management decisions.
Fenichel previously served as an assistant professor of bioeconomics and ecosystem management at F&ES, before being advanced to an associate professor in 2018. His scholarship focuses on the interactions between ecological and human systems to develop economic theory related to environmental management. His research work has been financially supported by grants from groups like the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, with findings published in an array of journals focused on ecology, health and economics.
“Eli is an exceptional scholar, teacher and mentor who is making distinctive and influential contributions to research in his discipline,” said Indy Burke, the Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. Dean and Professor of Ecosystem Ecology at F&ES. “This appointment will give him the opportunity to continue his important work and solidify the School’s place as a leader in this field.”
The endowed position is funded by the Knobloch Family Foundation, which is dedicated to preserving land and wild spaces for animals and to valuing natural resources. A vibrant space on Kroon Hall’s third floor bears the name of Carl and his wife of nearly six decades, Emily, in recognition of their generosity during the construction of Kroon Hall. The family continues to be supportive of the School’s work.
Knobloch, who passed away in 2016, also endowed the deanship of F&ES in 2007.
